  3. Electronic Reserves

  7. Here at UTD, we have started an interesting cooperative project between
  8. Academic Computing and the Library Circulation Desk.  We are putting the
  9. library's reserves into Gopher.
  10.  
  11. The project got off the ground with two major goals.  The first was to
  12. allow students to gain access to the reserves of the library without
  13. physically having to enter the library.  The second was to eventually
  14. offload some work from the circulation desk.
  15.  
  16. Fall 94 is our first semester and is more or less a feasibility test.
  17. To start with, we immediately decided that we would not pursue the
  18. legal and licensing issues with copyrighted materials until the project
  19. was deemed a success.  This left us with class notes and homework solutions.
  20. To simplify the problem, we decided to only scan in typed documents.  Dealing
  21. with handwritten documents especially math solutions was deferred until later.

  23. The project has only been going on a month now so conclusions are
  24. difficult for us to reach.  Other universities have been doing it for
  25. longer and seem happy with the results.  One conclusion I can already
  26. make is that the most important part of making the project a success
  27. will be advertising its availability to the patrons.

  29. Our particular project is not available over the Internet outside of
  30. our campus.  However, the Internet can be used to support such a system
  31. when distance learning is involved.
